A few hours in low sec

April 29th, 2010 recon No comments

Since my corp was war deced, and we weren’t supposed to mess about in Empire, I figured a trip to low sec in my trusty Rifter would be fun.

Until today, I hadn’t really tested the Rifter in combat beyond high sec rats. After a few jumps, I was in a 0.4 system, and busily disposing of Destroyer, Cruiser, and later, Battlecruiser class rats. Although it took awhile, I was able all of them out (the BC took forever to pop though).

My fitting consisted of:

X Item Meta
3 150mm Auto Cannon 3
1 Rocket Launcher 2
1 AB 3
1 Web 1
1 Warp Scrambler 3
1 200mm Armor Plates 4
1 Armor Repairer 4
1 Damage Control 0

There was a close call when I went to look for Thermal damage rockets on the market while sitting in a belt. A pilot with horrible standing warped into the belt. Luckily, the Rifter warps in about a second, so the other pilot never got a lock on me. Lesson of the day: If you aren’t in safe space (e.g. high sec if not war-deced), do what you’re there to do and get out. Being distracted in unsafe space will get you podded.

Another quick lesson: If you see a pilot with horrible standing on grid (appears in your overview), run. They have a horrible standing / security status for a reason.

Hello iPad

April 23rd, 2010 recon No comments

Well… It’s only been a few months since I last posted…

I’ve been busy with EVE Online, classes, and the usual gaming tasks.

I recently acquired an iPad. So far, I’m pretty impressed. The build quality is, as with all Apple products, incredible.

The interface is very similar to the iPod touch / iPhone, but has a few design changes to take advantage of the larger screen. Text input with the on screen keyboard is much better than I thought it would be (this post was written in the WordPress iPad app), web browsing is fast and responsive, and all of the base apps have been redesigned to take advantage of the larger screen.

The clock and calculator apps aren’t present on the iPad, which is a bit silly. However, replacements can be found in the app store.

With the iPad, I think Apple has set the standard for mid sized mobile computing (as they did for micro size with the iPhone), and clearly established themselves as the market leader.

Hopefully I’ll have time to start writing some posts on EVE soon.

That’s all for now…
